ocr: Chicago's Solution to Lack of Open Space In the late 1860s, Chicago's city planners realized that having open space made the city a much more pleasant place to live. They planned a park system that included parks along the shore of Lake Michigan and forest preserves around the ouskirts of the city. From Lincoln Park in the north to the South Parks, a greenbelt of parkland circled the city. Parks were planned near public transportation routes so that citizens could getto parks easily. The green areas on the map show Chicago's parks in 1900.
